Beating My Own Drum

(semi-free-association style)

I've been living and working in Switzerland for the last 30 years. I came here originally to study Baroque Trumpet with Edward H. Tarr at the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. I also performed as trumpet soloist in the USA and Europe.

In 1980 I was engaged to teach trumpet at the Musikschule der Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel and started the Wind Band/Big Band program there in 1983 which enjoyed considerable success, including winning competitions in Holland and America. I taught there until 2002. I also was founder, owner and chief engraver of Music of Note as well as serving as a SYSOP on the Apple Computer Expert Forums (ACE) with Compuserve, giving technical support and advice to Compuserve users with Mac/PC related questions/problems.

In 1995, partly as a preparation for my upcoming trombone examinations, I helped found the Basler Trombone Quartett, which is still going strong.

In 1996 I received a teaching diploma for trombone and euponium at the then Konservatorium der Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel. I also at this time founded the Computer Lab in the Teachers' Education Department at the Musik-Akademie Basel and ran it until July 2000. Up until March 2008 I was Systems Engineer at the College of Industrial Design and Media Art (presently in Aarau, as of 2012 in Basel) where I'd been since November 2001. As of February 2008 I am EDV-Coordinator and ICT-Supporter at the Ethnological Seminar of the University of Zürich. A new year at a new job with new and challenging responsibilities

In December 2005 I completed the coursework and passed the examinations to qualify as Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist and Apple Certified Technical Coordinator. And in Febraury 2006 I passed the examinations to qualify as Apple Certified Systems Administrator.

My arrangements and notation assignments can be obtained from such publishers as: HBS Nepomuk (Aarau), Kunzelmann Musikverlag (Zürich), Hug und Co. (Zürich), Musikverlag Emil Ruh (Adliswil, Switzerland), ITC Editions Marc Reift (Crans Montana), Musikverlag Wolfgang G. Haas (Köln), and Solid Brass Music Co. (USA).

In January 2000 Lukas Nüesch and I started the Swiss National Musicians Databank/Concert Calendar in the Web. This was a one-of-a-kind project ion Switzerland providing resources and a meeting point for professional classical and jazz musicians. This collaberation lasted until 2003 (thanks Lukas for the opportunity!).

I was a Beta Tester for Finale from 1996 through June 2002 and for Sibelius from 1998-2000.

As a result of a thrombosis in my leg in February 1999 which turned into lung embolisms I was given the chance by my wife to return, after an absence of 18 years, to the realm of dog owners. My first dog in Switzerland has not only a special place in my heart - one says "you only get one fanatastic dog in this life" and Luna was my second) but she also has her own web site. But be warned: Luna's WebSite is only for those with too much time on their hands or the same kind of crazy love, appreciation and respect for dogs that I have. Although Luna is now waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge, we have a new four-legged family member - a real sweety named Vela. You've been warned.

There you have it. That's me. Maybe someday I will stop paying for this domain name and this page will disappear. Or maybe appear somewhere else. Thanks for stopping by. You'll excuse me for not posting an Email address. It's not that I don't want to hear from YOU. It's just that I don't want to hear from all those spammers. If you want to get in touch, google me, give me a call and say HI!
